Hilgrove: The Story So Far

We’ve been working with Hilgrove residents since 2020. Here’s what we’ve done so far…

We hired Community Organisers

In June 2020, we hired 5 residents on the Hilgrove estate to become Community Organisers. Their job? To organise events, discussions and initiatives for residents, to create a better sense of community on Hilgrove.

Humans of Hilgrove

In August, they began their first project whilst in the pandemic: Humans of Hilgrove, a photo exhibition across the estate celebrating the people, stories and diversity of Hilgrove. The exhibition launched in October 2020, and was featured on BBC London, the Camden New Journal and the Ham & High.

You can read more about the exhibition here.

We built community knowledge

In November 2020, the Community Organisers began the research phase of the project. Here, COs interviewed Hilgrove residents about life on the estate: what they liked, and what they thought could be changed for the better.

The Community Organisers found that three main themes came out of these discussions:

The Hilgrove Assembly

In April 2021, the Community Organisers started recruiting residents to take part in the Hilgrove Assembly. This is a group of Hilgrove residents aged 16+, coming up with ideas for change on the estate around the three main themes.

Between June - August, the Assembly workshops took place. The first two took place online via Zoom, and the third, on the
‘Built Environment’, took place on the estate itself.
